TOPIC 05 · Port Drayage

Picking Up and Returning Containers at Port

Port drayage involves more than delivery to a warehouse: pickup, equipment handoffs, and empty return must also be arranged. Follow an import container move to check the terminal, appointment, equipment, and timing at each stage.

FOLLOW AN IMPORT CONTAINER

Is the job finished when the container reaches the warehouse?

You drive for a drayage carrier: collect a loaded import container, take it to a warehouse for unloading, then return the empty as instructed. In Chinese trucking conversation, “柜” means a container.

01

READ DISPATCH · WHICH TERMINAL?

“Go to the port” is not a complete destination

This short container move is Drayage 短驳/拖柜. A port has different Terminal 码头场站 locations. The port’s name alone is not enough; you need the specific facility and its entry arrangements.

The Container 集装箱 holds the cargo; the wheeled Chassis 底盘 supports it. Their pickup and return arrangements may be managed separately.

Dispatch gives you the job

“Pick up the import container, deliver it to the warehouse, then return the empty.”

提进口柜,送到仓库卸货,然后还空柜。

02

BEFORE DEPARTURE · THREE SEPARATE CHECKS

An appointment does not answer every readiness question

An Appointment System 预约系统 schedules a particular transaction. Container availability, access requirements, and the appointment’s validity are separate checks. The following sequence belongs to this teaching example, not a universal terminal checklist.

  1. Is the container available?

Ask dispatch to check Container Release 集装箱放行, physical availability, and unresolved holds separately. Vessel arrival or customs release alone does not establish that every pickup condition is satisfied.

  2. Does the appointment match the move?

Match the facility, date, time window, and pickup or return transaction. Confirm changes before proceeding.

  3. Are driver and equipment cleared for entry?

Check driver and vehicle access requirements. TWIC 运输工作者身份凭证 supports unescorted access to secure areas of covered maritime facilities; it is not a pickup appointment.

Before leaving, you can ask dispatch

“Is the container available, and is the pickup appointment confirmed?”

柜现在能提了吗?提柜预约也确认了吗?

03

AFTER UNLOADING · RETURN AND TIMING

Unloaded and returned are two different events

After unloading, the next step is Empty Return 还空柜. Check the current location, acceptance conditions, and appointment; do not assume the original terminal accepts it. Keep the EIR 设备交接单 and check the recorded time, equipment condition, and other handoff details.

Free time is an allowed period; Last Free Day 最后免费日 is its final date. The import-pickup deadline need not be the empty-return deadline. Check which charge the date concerns and the applicable receiving cutoff.

Demurrage 码头超期相关费

Commonly concerns a container remaining at a terminal beyond free time. Check the space or equipment and dates being charged.

Per Diem 按日用箱/设备费

Often refers to equipment-use charges after pickup, and can concern chassis as well as containers. Ask which equipment and period the bill covers.

In road transport, Detention 等待费 often means a charge for driver waiting at pickup or delivery; in ocean shipping it can mean equipment use. Read who is billing and what the charge is for, not just its name.

Before returning the empty, ask

“Where should I return the empty, and do I need an appointment?”

空柜要还到哪里?需要预约吗?

Check free time, counting rules, and the responsible party against applicable rules and actual documents; this example does not set a rate or deadline.

You have collected and unloaded an import container. Can you simply return it to the original terminal?

EXPLORE & LOOK UP

Vocabulary for this topic 19

The example introduces 5 core terms. Explore the others by situation; select a term to read its definition.

What is being moved?

The drayage move, the box carrying goods, and the chassis beneath it.

Drayage拖柜 / 短驳CORE

Short-distance container transportation between ports, rail terminals, depots, and customer warehouses.

Full entry & related terms
Container集装箱

Standardized steel box — common sizes 20', 40', 40' HC, 45'. The basic unit of ocean + drayage freight.

Full entry & related terms
Chassis底盘 / 拖架

The wheeled frame supporting a container for road transport, separate from the container itself. It may be owned or supplied under another arrangement; confirm its pickup, return, and use requirements.

Full entry & related terms

Before entering the terminal

Check the location, appointment, and access credential separately.

Terminal码头CORE

A facility where freight is loaded, unloaded, or transferred. In drayage it usually means a particular container terminal within a port; in other contexts it may be a rail or freight terminal. Knowing the port name alone is not enough to identify the facility.

Full entry & related terms
Appointment System预约系统CORE

A system for booking a terminal visit for pickup, return, or another transaction. Platforms, time windows, and receiving conditions vary. A confirmed appointment does not by itself mean the container is released, charges are settled, or pickup can proceed.

Full entry & related terms
TWIC CardTWIC 港口准入卡

A TSA-issued Transportation Worker Identification Credential used for unescorted access to secure areas of facilities or vessels covered by maritime-security rules, among other required uses. It does not replace a terminal appointment or other access procedures.

Full entry & related terms
Container Release集装箱放行

In drayage, the status that required authorizations for an import container to enter the pickup process have been satisfied, often checked separately for ocean-carrier release, customs release, and other holds. “Released” does not by itself mean the box is discharged and available, an appointment exists, charges are resolved, or the gate will accept the truck.

Pickup, return, and charge terms

Equipment use, terminal space, and driver waiting are different things.

Demurrage港口滞箱费CORE

In ocean shipping, a possible charge when a container or cargo remains at a terminal beyond allowed free time. It is common in import pickup workflows. Check free time, billed days, and the actual invoice; the term alone does not make the driver the payer.

Full entry & related terms
Per Diem用箱超期费CORE

Literally “per day.” In port workflows it commonly labels daily equipment-use charges for containers or chassis. Read the bill and terms to identify the equipment, free time, and charging period; the term alone does not identify which equipment is involved.

Full entry & related terms
Detention滞留费

In road freight, a charge associated with driver or vehicle waiting at pickup or delivery. Free time, billing conditions, rates, and responsibility depend on applicable terms. In ocean shipping the word can refer to equipment use, so context matters.

Full entry & related terms
Dual Transaction一进一出

Delivering one container and collecting another during a single terminal visit. Examples include returning an empty then collecting an import, or dropping an export then taking an empty. Both moves must meet the terminal’s current receiving and appointment conditions.

Full entry & related terms
LFD Free Time / Last Free Day免堆期 / 最后免费日

Free time is the period during which a container or cargo may remain at a terminal or similar facility without the applicable storage or demurrage charge. The last free day is the final day or cutoff in that period. One is a period and the other a deadline; calculation varies by terminal, carrier, cargo, and current rule.

Full entry & related terms
MTY Empty Return还空柜

The return of an unloaded import container to the terminal, depot, or yard currently designated and accepting it for the ocean carrier or equipment provider. The location and conditions may vary by line, size, type, date, shift, and inventory. An empty return is a different transaction from delivering a loaded export.

Full entry & related terms
EIR Equipment Interchange Receipt设备交接单

A terminal or depot record generated when a container, chassis, or other equipment is interchanged or processed at the gate. It commonly includes equipment identifiers, direction, time, and recorded condition or damage. It evidences the interchange but is not a release, an appointment confirmation, or conclusive proof of damage responsibility.

Release and chassis arrangements

Separate holds from equipment arrangements.

Customs Hold海关扣留状态

A customs-related hold preventing routine cargo release, distinct from terminal restrictions or a carrier's freight release.

Full entry & related terms
Freight Release运费放行

A carrier's release status for freight-payment or commercial-document conditions; other holds may remain.

Full entry & related terms
Terminal Hold场站限制状态

A terminal-system hold or pending restriction whose reason and release conditions must be checked with that terminal.
