A fuel card advertises a large per-gallon saving. How do I compare it?

Separate costs you bear, reimbursable expenses and contract revenue before comparing savings. Calculations and questions below are original teaching examples. Official and operator sources were checked on October 13, 2026; this is not a product recommendation or a savings guarantee.

Operator example: The current WEX Fleet Card page makes rebates conditional on factors including location and purchase volume, and excludes listed major truck stops from that rebate. These terms apply to that product, not every card from the same brand. WEX product terms

Practical checklist: For available stops on the same route and at the same time, compare the actual purchase price, discount basis, rebate conditions, transaction charges, monthly fees and other applicable costs. Request a complete fee schedule for your usage and payment method. Compare equal quantities, then add detour fuel and time. A bigger discount does not automatically mean a lower net price. Check tax reconciliation separately; rebates or purchases in a lower-tax state do not establish tax exemption.

Useful phrase: “What is my effective price after all applicable fees, and when is the rebate credited?” / “计入所有适用费用后,我的实际价格是多少?返利何时到账?”
