Regulation Navigator
Start with the trucking task at hand, read an explanation and find the regulation and official sources.
What are you working on?
Start with a work situation to understand the requirements, common mistakes and next steps.
Port operations
Port work involves several credentials and systems. Identify which layer is causing the issue before opening the related port, vehicle, or appointment source.
Short-haul exceptions and conditions
Check the radius, return/release time and carrier time records before using the short-haul recordkeeping exception. Short-haul does not mean unlimited driving.
ELD edits, malfunctions and unidentified driving
Logs can be corrected without erasing the original record. Resolve actual driving attribution, then distinguish an ELD malfunction from a data diagnostic event.
Maintenance, periodic inspections and BIT
Routine maintenance, periodic inspection and California’s 90-day inspections have distinct rules. Schedule the applicable vehicles, intervals and retention periods separately.
Tires, lamps and emergency equipment
Start with defects that affect safety, then check tires, lights and emergency equipment. Meeting one numerical minimum does not establish that the whole vehicle is safe.
Cargo securement and en-route checks
Cargo securement must satisfy movement prevention, strength and tiedown-count requirements together. Reinspect during the trip where the rules require it.
California weights, dimensions and permits
Measure dimensions and axle loads before checking the route. An acceptable gross weight does not rule out an axle-group, tire, length or local restriction.
California speed, lanes and tire chains
In California, check the applicable truck speed limit and lane designation, then adjust for conditions and controls. Do not assume passenger-car chain or phone practices apply to a heavy truck.
