Maintaining Carrier Records After the Motus Transition
Existing carriers keep their USDOT Number when moving to Motus. A successful login leaves company linking, certification and required updates to complete. Use the Company Official's original Login.gov email from the FMCSA Portal, then follow FMCSA's claiming instructions. Contact support if the number or linking prompt is missing; do not apply for a replacement number to bypass an error.
Review imported company information before final certification. Compare names, addresses, contacts, vehicle and driver data with business records, following the current form instructions. A Pending Certification notice requires further action. Save submission confirmations and check the resulting record rather than treating a draft or pending review as completed.
For carriers subject to 49 CFR 390.19T, biennial updates follow the USDOT Number schedule. An odd next-to-last digit means odd-numbered filing years; an even digit means even-numbered years. Final digits 1 through 9 correspond to January through September, and 0 means October. Filing is due by that month's last day.
FMCSA also requires information changes within 30 days. Its FAQ recognizes changes reported within 12 months before the biennial deadline as satisfying that update. Check actual submission records. Biennial updates are free; other transactions and private services may involve separate charges.
Carriers who mistakenly selected the Transportation Service Provider role should consult the specific Registration Alert before permanently closing that account. For technical problems, preserve error details, timestamps and support responses, and follow the original ticket. Never share passwords or verification codes.
As checked September 8, 2026, FMCSA temporarily suspends USDOT inactivation for entities missing required biennial updates since June 1. Complete the update and separately verify other registration, authority and insurance issues. A support ticket does not guarantee an extension, penalty relief or permission to operate. This information is general guidance, not an individual compliance determination.
