What to Do When a Loaded Truck Is Over Axle or Overweight in California

A scale ticket can show legal gross weight and still identify an overweight axle or axle group. Before moving, separate the steer axle, drive tandem, trailer tandem, other axle groups and gross vehicle weight. California’s familiar figures include 20,000 pounds on a single axle, 34,000 pounds on a tandem and 80,000 pounds gross, but axle spacing, tire limits, declared operating weight, route restrictions and the Federal Bridge Formula may set a lower limit.
When gross weight is legal and the problem is weight distribution, sliding the trailer tandems may transfer weight between the drive and trailer groups. Moving the tandems toward the tractor generally adds weight to the trailer group; moving them rearward generally does the opposite. Pounds per hole are not fixed. Make small adjustments in an authorized, safe location, verify that all locking pins are engaged and reweigh after every change. Also check California’s kingpin-to-rearmost-axle limit, generally 40 feet for a semitrailer with two or more axles, and confirm the route remains legal.
Sliding tandems or a fifth wheel cannot reduce gross vehicle weight. A reducible load usually must be unloaded, reworked, split into another trip or moved on another legal vehicle. After moving cargo, recheck securement, document seal or bill-of-lading changes and obtain a final scale ticket.
If the truck remains at the loading facility, keep it there and contact the shipper and dispatcher. If it is already on a public highway or under CHP inspection, stop safely and follow official directions about movement, adjustment or unloading. A nearby warehouse or Caltrans permit is not automatic authority to continue with a reducible overweight load.
California statutory fines vary by excess weight. Offense classification, court assessments and responsibility depend on the cited section and facts. Keep the original and final tickets, axle readings, tandem positions, pin photos, KPRA measurement, dispatch instructions, rework records, securement check and official release documents.
