Hours remaining on the log do not measure physical readiness. This chapter offers general health information and ways to communicate at work, not a diagnosis or an individual fitness-to-drive decision. Official sources consulted: October 13, 2026.
Official requirement: Under 49 CFR 392.3, a driver must not begin or continue driving when fatigue, illness or another cause makes, or is likely to make, it unsafe; the carrier must not require or permit it. Available legal hours therefore do not establish safe alertness. The grave-emergency exception is not permission to push on for an appointment. 49 CFR 392.3
Practical steps: If you struggle to stay awake or remain attentive, arrange to stop as soon as possible at a safe, legal place. Tell dispatch you cannot continue safely and revise the plan; do not stop indiscriminately in a traffic lane. Coffee or an open window cannot establish that you are fit to continue. If excessive sleepiness recurs despite adequate rest, record the timing and sleep pattern and discuss your work with a clinician.
Useful phrase: “I am too fatigued to drive safely. I need a safe stopping plan and a revised schedule.” “我现在过于疲劳,无法安全驾驶,需要安排安全停车并调整行程。”
Forum remedies are not used to determine fatigue, medication safety or medical qualification. Explain your circumstances to the responsible professionals when decisions involve continued driving, an examination or treatment.
